Where Grownups Make Friends

Information

Melody's Book Club

Let's talk about books. I think we have begun to lose our abilities to sit down and stay still and simply read. Maybe the "old-fashioned good book" will enrich us, help decompress our busy selves. Let's write about what we like to read about.

I don't know if this will work, but this is the TPL newsletter referring to Old City Hall and Robert Rotenberg.

Linny. have you read "Watchers" by Dean Koontz? If not, I think you'd really like it. A lot of his books, including this one, have wonderful dogs in them.

I've just started reading "Against Destiny" by Alexander Dolinin, a member of the Hamilton Writers group. It tells an amazing fictional account of escape from Stalin's Gulag; a story of courage and determination in the face of the impossible. The dilemma of the unjustly condemned: Die in slavery or die fighting fro your freedom.

It is a very engrossing story but I have some difficulty with all the Russian names. It is a hardcover with dustjacket I bought from the author at a meeting. Unfortunately, the publisher went out of business, so Alexander has all the copies of his book.
It is ISBN 978-1-60164-173-1

It is the author's first book and based on truth and is well researched. Worth reading for the info we seldom hear about the USSR and their extreme cruelty.

My first Dean Koontz was Life Expectancy and it caught me in the first chapter when the main character was in the waiting room while his wife was giving birth and his father was also dying in the same hospital. There was a clown in the waiting room with him. Before he died his father sat up in bed and said "beware of the clown; he is not what you think he is". Well, how could you not read it.

I just got a new one on my Kobo called Fear Nothing. I have never been disappointed by Dean, but I guess you have to be in the mood for him, hahaha. I have two books for the TPL book buzz group ready to read for September and October. I seem to get way ahead there. I haven't been disappointed in any of their reads though and find its a good resource for new authors to read.

The Stephen King I'm reading now is "Under The Dome". I read "Duma Key" about a month ago. Never mind his subject matter, King really knows how to keep you captivated.

I think the kindle has an audio (voice) feature, but someone told me it's a computer generated voice and not too good to listen to. Not like an audio book. You can download audio books to a laptop and listen to them too. I've downloaded some from the library for long road trips where I don't want to read.

Duma Key was the last Stephen King I read. It was the big heavy hardcover book. Hard to hold when I read in bed, but in any case, a very entertaining book.
