Where Grownups Make Friends

I watched the Michael Coren show this evening and they were debating
that Stephen Harper mentioned the word God in his speech.
One person says that he just wanted to boost his image in Quebec.
What do you think?

I personally feel that anyone of authority that would imply that he is guided by an invisible man in the clouds is beyond contempt. Someone who has the well being of everyone in the country should only act on naturalistic empirical data, not superstition!!

So, am I banned from Zoomeers because of my opinion?

Dear Robert,
Thank you for your reply. Would it be amiss of me to ask why you do not trust him?.
If you do not feel that this is an appropriate question to answer, I will understand.
Also since it is my belief that universal thought in the world can appear very strong.
Could it not be that in this case we get what our expectations are.
Thanks again Robert for taking the time to share you opinion. I hope that we can share other topics in the future.
Sincerly
Marlene

I don't trust anything Harper says. It's expected that politicians will lie to the electorate, but not to the degree that Harper has been doing so. Also, politicians are expected to be rather nice people, not mean-spirited. If God is Love, then Harper is way off base using his name. His definition of Christianity is to instill fear and to beat the masses into submission based on that fear.

Dear Chuck,
You will never be banned from anything for being honest. I may not agree, but you have a right to your feelings. I just want to ask you what makes you think that he is a invisible man in the clouds it could be a invisible women. ha

Honest or not honest...... that is the question? Let's go back to the Reform Party Days. At that the Liberals were in power. Then, Debra Grey and Stephen Harper of the Reform Party made comments to the effect that those Liberals were 'Pigs at the Trough' for accepting Gold Plated MP Pensions. Guess what? As soon as the Reform Party converted to the Conservative Party everyone except for possibly Preston Manning, went running at top speed to the same 'Trough' and gladly accepted these tax payer funded Gold Plated MP Pensions. I believe anything Stephen says has to be carefully thought about on an individual basis. However; I now think that Preston Manning could have elevated Federal politics to a new level of honesty including how religion should be considered in political speeches.

Dear Joe,
Thank you for your reply. I would agree with you that it would be refreshing to see more honesty demonstrated in Politics. I was a member of the Reform party for 2 years and at first loved it. Then as time went on some political bickering began and I did not feel that this was a right form for me. Preston Manning did have a very balanced thought and would have done a great deal of good for this country. I liked Stephen Harper at that time and felt that he would be a good leader. I was never privy to Stephen talking in this undesirable manner. i am not saying that he did not happen as you said, but that would not be the Stephen that i knew. I do not agree with some of the steps he has taken to push this country forward but i think that he does deserve
as any other leader a chance to prove that his actions are either right or wrong.
This position does come with a lot of pressure and I am sure that it cannot be easy.
I am of the belief that there is nothing wrong with including a mention of God in any speech, it is the motive behind this action that tells the story.

Hello Marlene,
I feel that God does have a place in politics since it was He who created the world and offers guidance to all those who put their trust in Him. Certainly it would be a good thing for our government to call on Him for all the important decisions they have to make.
In addition, I believe that the majority of Canadians believe is some sort of higher power regardless of what they call Him or Her or It. Certainly all of the major religions including Christianity, Muslim, Judaism, and even Hinduism and Native Spirituality place God at the top of their list. Since God as a Spirit is everywhere, why should He/She not be included in our government affairs.
In addition, our laws in this country are based on the Ten Commandments which were in existence and present when our Fathers of Confederation formed this country. "Thou shalt not Steal, Thou shalt not Kill, Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour...and so on" still hold true today and are part of our foundation. Why should we now exclude God from our government?
I know this will no doubt stimulate some discussion, but it is what I believe.

Dear David.
I could not have said it any better myself. I belief this this concept
of God. Spirit is everywhere and when we truly realize this ,we will also know that he or she created us in his image and likeness. This likeness is not in the material world because the kingdom of heaven is within us all. It must then be consciousness expressing itself. The way we think for good or not so good determines the out come of our lives. Thank you for your excellant response.

Sorry for raining on your parade, but you-all may have noticed that God has not been around to handle any of the large or small problems that have beset us in modern times, from wars, terror, or even corrupt politicians. I do not deny that everyone and anyone can invoke God's name, but let's face it, it's only for politics.....

If it's obvious that he's expressing some personal view of his, I think that's
tolerable (should mention I'm a total atheist). But if he's commenting on official
government policy, I believe it's a no-no . . separation of church and state at all times.
