Where Grownups Make Friends

Strange there's been no response to date.
I thought this site would have been of some interest to those of U.K. background, & who might want to query this interesting site as to the start of T.V. & Radio over there.

Being a Brit born and raised, plus being of a certain age, I of course remember nearly all of that. Only a couple of people in our road had a TV and I was lucky enough to be friends with a girl who's parents had one. So, I used to get to see Whirligig, Muffin the Mule and listen to the terribly well-spoken presenters.

At one time there was only one TV in the road and everyone was invited in to watch Queen Elizabeth's Coronation. The average house in UK is the semi-detached type and often not very big. I can still remember the scene. It was standing room only in their living room. :)

Hello Mart44,
Yes, I too lived in an area of Glasgow, where T.V.'s & cars, were very scarce. But, I enjoyed listening to the Radio progs., at different tmes of the day.
Saw the Queen's Coronation a few years later on, when it was re-broadcast.
The kids in my School at that time, Mosspark Primary, all received tins of candies, with her likeness on the cover. And, we were taken by bus to stand outside of Bellahouston Park, to see her drive by in an open limousine, on her way to Glasgow's City Hall.
Finding this site, & being able to bring up those names, voices, & photos of the people / characters who entertained us all, has been quite enjoyable.
Robert

Ah yes, radio. That was the big thing of the time. My sister and I used to huddle around the radio listening to Dan Dare - Pilot of the Future. That was on Radio Luxembourg and the signal was always fading right at the most exciting bits. :) Then there was Dick Barton - Special Agent.

I used to spend hours going through the shortwave band seeing what stations could be picked up and listening to all the foreign languages.

Don't forget Tommy Handley, Much Binding in the Marsh, Big Bill Cambell Wilfred Pickles and Arthur Askey.
